National Geographic shoves every morsel of its collection onto 160GB HDD
Author: admin30 Dec 2009

Care to get up close and personal with Niihau? How’s about an overview of Tuvalu? Surely you need a helicopter shot of Pakatoa Island to get your morning started right, yeah? If so, and you’re too lazy to hit up the World Wide Web, there’s a better-than-average chance that an older National Geographic magazine has exactly the elixir you’re searching for. Problem is, sifting through every single issue since 1888 takes a fair bit of time — time you’d rather be spending in an obnoxiously long security line as you await your flight to Ushuaia. Thanks to "modern technology" and "storage innovations," said quandary can now be resolved quite simply. Nat Geo is offering every last piece of information it has ever published on a portable 160GB HDD, and amazingly 100GB is free for you to manually add to the collection. Too bad this $199.95 device wasn’t available before Christmas, but hey, at least you’ve now got something to blow those Santa Bucks on.

tracking a wolf with GPS
Author: admin30 Dec 2009

Bunch of U.S. Geological Survey researchers decided to put a GPS enabled collar around a wolf – which they named Brutus – and tracked him from July to end of November.
During this time they got updates from the animal every 12 hours for a total of 289 location updates. Considering today even cheap GPS receiver can provide one second updates makes us think they were very conservative about the battery.
They’ve discovered a lot about wolves’ traveling habit. For example the wolf traveled about 1700 miles during this time and the longest run was almost as long as a marathon which Brutus finished under 84 hours. However these are all under-estimates since the calculations are based on 12-hour readings and this wolf probably does not walk along a straight line as seen on this map.
Oh, and if you’re wondering to yourself – how did a wolf make it across that giant body of water – you’re not alone. It was all frozen at the time and could be traveled on foot/paw.
You can read more about the research on the arctic wolves of Ellesmere Island on their blog…

Blio for e-book reading
Author: admin30 Dec 2009
Blio is software that is enabled for cross-platforms such as the iPhone and PC. Designed by Kurzweil, it “lets you read your ebooks as they’re intended to look on paper”.
Blio gives the user/e-reader access to a book’s rich illustrations, and its text-to-speech capabilities to turn any e-book into an audiobook. This Blio app is probably going to be for free, and it should change the platform for e-book reading next year with all the readers and tablets that are being released.

GSM encryption cracked
Author: admin30 Dec 2009

This is bad news for GSM cellphone users. The encryption that protects the transmission of your voice data over the GSM networks, has been cracked by a group of 24 hackers in Berlin. Meaning that the voice calls transmitted over the GSM networks could possibly be eavesdropped or intercepted.
GSM networks actually use the A5/1 algorithm, a 64-bit encryption for voice calls placed over GSM networks. But Nohl, the encryption specialist, has taken the raw binary data and turned them into a 2 terabytes “code book”, which can be used to decode the valid encryption key.
