Magic Mouse post-teardown loses some of its dark arts charm
Author: admin22 Oct 2009

Were you expecting unicorn tears or something? iFixit keeps working to finish its list of teardown to-dos, this time with Apple’s new Magic Mouse. It probably comes as no surprise, but just under the top surfaces lies a considerable number of capacitive sensors, and other than that, there really isn’t a lot to gaze upon. Then again, if you tend to fancy the ins and outs if gears and gizmos, this should be right up your alley.

Google, Verizon team up to throw support behind FCC’s net neutrality push
Author: admin22 Oct 2009

Google and [insert any wireless carrier here] are the last two entities in the world that we’d expect to issue a joint statement on net neutrality, seeing how Google firmly believes the FCC should enforce it regardless of medium while carriers generally want to be exempted — but Verizon and The Goog have put their differences aside for just one day to put together a thoughtful, lengthy piece on the subject. There aren’t any surprises in the piece other than the fact that CEOs Lowell McAdam and Eric Schmidt are personally attributed to the statement,

Author: admin22 Oct 2009

Apparently not pushed back until January, GeeksPhone’s Android-imbued smartphone, the One, is launching in Spain this December, recently-added physical keyboard and all. So far, the limited edition run will not be crossing Spanish borders on its own, but we doubt that’ll stop any interested parties on foreign land. Final price will be 285 euro (US $427), 22 of which is all you need to put down to reserve yours today.

First White Space Network Available in Claudville, Virginia
Author: admin22 Oct 2009
White Space is a term used in telecommunications used to describe frequencies that should be used for broadcasting although but not used anymore. So guess what happened after everyone was forced to switch to digital TV? A bunch of frequencies out there were turned into white space so we should see plenty of networks use the freed up bands in the near future.
The first white space network is currently running in an experimental stage in Claudville, Virginia. The town’s school and computer center were equipped by Dell, Microsoft and the TDF Foundation but we have no white space network performance reports yet. Hopefully everything goes well so other similar rural areas can upgrade their current Internet connections.

Acer’s done plenty of boasting about its very first 3D laptop, the Aspire 5738DG, but it’s just now gotten completely official, and let a few lucky folks get their hands on it. As you might expect, PC Magazine found the 3D part of the laptop to be something of a gimmick, although not entirely unimpressive. More specifically, while attempts at gaming or viewing standard video converted to 3D were apparently quite a letdown, the included TriDef software did reportedly do a pretty impressive job with photos,

Ah, Windows 7 Starter — you’re adding to the retail cost of netbooks, and for what? Lack of support for multiple monitors, DVD playback, or remote media streaming? Lack of Windows Media Center? Granted, these things aren’t at the top of your list if you’re rocking a netbook (and DVD playback won’t be on your list at all) but we have principles, y’know?
