The 13.3-inch VAIO-Z laptop is the Sony’s flagship machine, which will get an upgrade by the company to feature quad SSD and switchable graphics. Another interesting feature is the switchable graphics, which allows you to have options to choose from the powerful NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics or the energy-efficient integrated to save battery. Sony Eco Edition VAIO W Series

Sony unveils a new eco-friendly batch of mini notebooks with the launch of the VAIO W Series. They are light, compact and cover environmental issues such as energy efficiency and a 10% reduction on CO2 emission during production thanks to the use of recycled plastics.

The VAIO W Series Eco Edition features an Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, 250GB HDD and comes loaded with a genuine Windows 7 Starter Edition OS. It sports a 10.1” LED backlit LCD display and assures customers of no environmentally-harmful mercury. Battery life is good for 8.5 hours of use which should cover your worries about how long you can use it without plugging in to standard electric sockets. The VAIO W Series Eco Edition notebooks will be available this coming February.

Listen up Sony Reader owners: you’ve got three days to change your ways. On December 11th, the eBook Store from Sony will be renamed the Reader Store with a new URL to prove it. In addition to a new store layout, the change also extends the open EPUB format to Sony’s entire inventory of eBooks. In fact, any new electronic books will only be available in EPUB which helps explain the motivation for Sony’s PRS-500 trade-in program. As such, we can say goodbye to Sony’s proprietary BBeB ("BroadBand eBook") format which goes the way of ATRAC (outside of Japan, anyway). Sony’s also making its Reader Library 3.1 software for Mac and PC available on the same day with support for the imminent Reader Daily Edition launch and compatibility with Windows 7 and OS X Snow Leopard — how timely.

This is not a secret that many companies are hoping that 2010 will be the year of the 3D, and it seems that Sony has now taken a big blow inch per align a partnership with one of the biggest events of the year: the World Cup. As the pair have announced today, the new arrangement will be produced by at least 25 by Sony, 3D cameras will be visible across a variety of ways using 3D World Cup matches. Which includes special public consultation events in seven cities around the world (none in the North America unfortunately), "official 3D cinema" which will be previewed to Sony Stores and other retail points and, finally and most importantly, said film which is accessible at a Blu – ray disc responded to the World Cup. However, this is not the first time a soccer match released 3D, and it seems that it will not be the only option available to capture some 3D games next year either.

A while ago, Sony promised to give us the world’s smallest and lightest finger vein reader. It would appear that the Mofiria, or FVA-U1, will be out December 18th.

No word on a price as yet, but something that weighs only 33 grams and does what it does can’t be too cheap, right? By the way, it attaches via USB.

As we’re all undoubtedly aware, old gadgets don’t really die — they just just get modded eternally (as the continued appearance of Atari on these pages will attest). Another case-in-point: the Sony VAIO UX490N. It’s been a while since we laid eyes on one of these bad boys, but apparently there’s been plenty of hacking goin’ on ever since, including: upgrading the SSD to the RunCore Pro IV 128GB and swapping out the 1.2GHz CPU for a 1.33GHz Core 2 Duo (overclocked to 1.438GHz). And that’s just the beginning — the cats over at the Micro PC Talk forums have also installed a voice-capable HSPA modem, swapped out the old wireless card for one that supports a/b/g/n WiFi, and installed partitions for Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista Business, Windows 7 Ultimate and Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7. Impressive stuff, all that: but what if we told you that one fearless individual has applied every one of those changes to a single device? And that battery life was pretty much unaffected? Well, you’re probably going to want the details, right?
