TomTom EASE Valentine’s Day Special

TomTom took the entry level GPS navigation system TomTom EASE, changed the color from gray on gray to red on white and called it a Valentine’s Day special. Nothing wrong with that unless you’re buying this for a special someone to put off a bigger purchase you should be planning. This does cost a mere $120 after all on Amazon.

Features? Just the basics but it will still get you from A to B. 3.5″ touchscreen, TeleAtlas maps of the U.S, IQ routes, Map Share, and the TomTom special EasyPort mount. It does speak street names. Good enough.

WiLink 7.0 does GPS and more

TI reduces size, power consumption, and cost with its new WiLink 7.0 platform. It combines GPS, WiFi 802.11n, Blutooth, and FM transmit and receiver. Since everything is on one single chip manufacturers do not have to worry about interference, overlapping spectrums, and many other things the regular YouTube watching teenage kid doesn’t care about. It can use all connectivity cores in parallel and they have a video to prove it.

  • Motom tablet carries GPS

Chinese brand Motom may not be a very familiar name just yet but they’re hoping to change that with their latest GPS integrated tablet called M7.

Including its 7″ screen, the specs for the M7 are great as we’ll mention in a second, but only one thing caught our attention which we’d label ‘not-so-exciting’. The OS is Windows XP… Really guys?

But let’s just look beyond that and focus on the 1.3MP webcam, WiFi, 3G conectivity, HDMI port, multiple USB ports, 4800mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, and a 32GB SSD storage. Not bad huh?

Hopefully they can find a distributor here in the states so we can wipe that SSD drive clean and install Android OS on it… via

  • Fine Drive iQ 3D GPS navigation system

Fine Drive of Korea has just come out with another amazing GPS navigation system called Fine Drive iQ 3D.

Fine Drive iQ 3D features free 3D map updates, and TPEG for latest reliable traffic information. What’s unique about iQ 3D is that not only the buildings are rendered in 3D but also the whole terrain of South Korea. But if that’s too much to consume on one 7″ screen for you, you could always switch back to 2D, or a simpler 3D version of the map.

It also features dead-reckoning so you won’t have to worry about losing GPS signal in tunnels, weather and news update with DMB channels, 6W integrated speakers, and software that is capable of calculating your carbon emissions.

Fine Drive iQ 3D will have a 8GB of internal storage and cost about 389,000KRW which is about $336

  • iPad does GPS.

No need speculate anymore. iPad does GPS if you have $629 or more. That’s because it is only available in the model that carries a 3G module.

Nowadays you can almost be sure that anything that carries a 3G antenna is also capable of A-GPS. A-GPS stands for “assisted GPS” and is actually better than plain old GPS, not the other way around.

But anyhow, the base model is also location aware, though not as much as the 3G model. It can figure out your location based on Wi-Fi signals, and figure out your direction using the digital compass. 3G model however can also figure out your location using cellular towers. Both models also carry the accelerometer.

So what can you do with a GPS enabled coffee table device? You can use any of the existing GPS navigation apps for the iPhone if for some reason you take it with you on a vehicle. No kidding though, this ridiculous article on NYTimes actually thinks Apple iPad is a threat to standalone GPS navigation systems. The commenters are even more funny…
