Kenwood DNX5140

We’re not sure why we haven’t mentioned the Kenwood DNX5140 before but maybe that’s a good thing. The MSRP for this 6.1″ TFT LCD touchscreen GPS navigation system with radio, and optical disc support was $1150 when it first came out in January, 2009 but now Amazon offers it for $606. It includes built-in Garmin navigation, direct iPod connection, USB music streaming, and front panel A/V input and output.
Kenwood DNX5140 has all of the features of the DNX6140 but with the built-in Bluetooth module deleted.

There’s a pretty recent (and decent) GPS app out there for the iPhone. It is not for driving directions but more for outdoor activities. Gaia GPS for the iPhone costs $2.99 and they’re going up against much more expensive GPS navigation apps as far as feature set. Gaia GPS have mobile access to topographic maps from MyTopo.com and it lets you view and download any number of maps at no additional charge. More of this gadget »

Guess what, kiddos? Garmin’s minty fresh connected PND is now shipping, and if you plan on getting your home address on one of those labels, you best break out the checkbook. The nüvi 1690 is now moving out from Amazon’s warehouses, and just as promised, it’s going for a penny under $500. Is real-time access to Google search, white page listings, real-time traffic and flight status updates on your GPS unit really worth all that cheddar?
